Semaglutide
- Mechanism of action: Semaglutide acts as an agonist of the GLP-1 receptor, which regulates blood glucose and appetite. By stimulating these receptors, it helps to reduce food intake and increases the feeling of satiety.
- Clinical efficacy: In clinical trials, Semaglutide has demonstrated significant weight loss in obese or overweight individuals, as well as in individuals with obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes.
- Administration: It is administered once a week by subcutaneous injection. The initial dose is low and is gradually increased over several weeks to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.
- Side effects: The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea and stomach upset. However, these effects usually diminish with time.
- Indications: Semaglutide is approved for use in the treatment of chronic obesity in adults with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 30, or in adults with a BMI equal to or greater than 27 who have at least one obesity-related disease, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or dyslipidemia.
